Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) wygrał na Al Marjan Island piąty odcinek wyścigu UAE Tour.
Belgijski sprinter na finiszu pokonał Holendra Olava Kooija (Jumbo-Visma) i Irlandczyka Sama Bennetta (Bora-hansgrohe).
Liderem wyścigu pozostał zwycięzca czwartego odcinka, Słoweniec Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).
Po górskim rozdaniu w środę, w czwartek do gry wrócili sprinterzy. Tym wiatry miały sprzyjać na płaskim odcinku prowadzącym na sztuczną wyspę Al Marjan. Po 175 kilometrach czekał wjazd na 6-kilometrową drogę w kształcie sierpa. Dojazd do ostatnich trzech kilometrów prowadził po wewnętrznej stronie łuku, finał po zewnętrznej, co wymagało nie tylko mocnych nóg, ale i dobrego wsparcia zespołu przed sprintem.
W odjazd ponownie zabrało się trzech kolarzy Gazprom-RusVelo: Pavel Kochetkov, Dmitr Strakhov i Michael Kukrle, którym tym razem postanowił towarzyszyć Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani-CSF). Czwórka odskoczyła na 4 minuty, ale długo nie cieszyła się swobodą. Pojawił się wiatr, co pobudziło peleton do żywej jazdy. Akcja padła już przed lotną premią (51 km), na której Jasper Philipsen finiszował przed Tadejem Pogacarem.
Grupa zwolniła, a z przodu ponownie zameldowali się Kochetkov, Strakhov i Tonelli, tym razem w towarzystwie kolegi klubowego tego ostatniego Johnatana Canaverala. Sytuacja się szybko powtórzyła, harcownicy zyskali blisko 4 minuty, zryw peletonu skasował ich 60 kilometrów przed metą, a następnie kolarze przeszli w tryb jazdy rekreacyjnej.
40 kilometrów przed finiszem, za sprawą kolarzy Alpecin-Fenix, nastąpiło kolejne przyspieszenie, a następnie odskoczył Michael Kukrle. Mistrz Czech na ostatnie 20 kilometrów wjechał z przewagą 2:26.
Ekipy sprinterskie musiały zabrać się do porządnej roboty. Temperatura dodatkowo skoczyła 6500 metrów przed kreską, kiedy to po defekcie za rozpędzonym peletonem został Pogacar. Lider wyścigu odstał na 30 sekund, lecz z pomocą kolegów błyskawicznie to odrobił. Kukrle został pożarty przez pościg na 3 kilometry przed kreską.
Finisz po raz drugi w wyścigu należał do Philipsena, który wyraźnie pokonał Kooija i Bennetta.
