Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) wygrał na Alpe di Mera dziewiętnasty etap wyścigu Giro d’Italia.
Brytyjczyk po ataku na ostatniej wspinaczce metę osiągnął 11 sekund przed Portugalczykiem João Almeidą (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) oraz 28 sekund przed liderem wyścigu Eganem Bernalem (Ineos Grenadiers).
Bernal obronił prowadzenie w klasyfikacji generalnej wyścigu.
Po trzech tygodniach rywalizacji “Corsa Rosa” powróciła w rejon, z którego rozpoczęła tegoroczną wędrówkę, do Piemontu. Alpejski odcinek prowadził na dystansie 166 kilometrów, przez 3 górskie premie, o narastającej trudności.
Ucieczka zawiązała się dopiero po 40 kilometrach, W akcję zabrali się Larry Warbasse (AG2R Citroën), Mark Christian (Eolo-Kometa), Giovanni Aleotti (Bora-hansgrohe), Andrea Pasqualon (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), Nicola Venchiarutti (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) i Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Fenix).
Po chwilowym uspokojeniu czoło peletonu zajęli kolarze Team BikeExchange i Deceuninck-Quick Step. Różnica pomiędzy obiema grupami na Alpe Agogna (83 km przed metą; 12,2 km; 2,9%, kat. 4) wynosiła 4 minuty.
W okolicach lotnej premii w Baveno (68 km przed metą) peleton rozerwał się. Z tyłu zagubił się siódmy zawodnik wyścigu, a przede wszystkim główny pomocnik Egana Bernala, Daniel Felipe Martinez. Na moment zrobiło się nerwowo, ale pościg Ineos Grenadiers, a właściwie Filippo Ganny, był mega skuteczny.
Na zjeździe upadł i wycofał się z wyścigu Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo). Ucieczce, od której odpadł Venchiarutti, na Passo della Colma (39 km przed metą; 7,5 km; 6,4%, kat. 3) w zapasie pozostała zaledwie minuta.
Na sam koniec pozostała stroma i kręta Alpe di Mera (9,7 km; 9%, kat. 1). 7,5 kilometra przed metą został wchłonięty ostatni z harcowników, Mark Christian. James Knox z Deceuninck-Quick-Step prowadził grupkę lidera, w której zostało około 15 kolarzy, a w tym osłaniający lidera wyścigu Jonathan Castroviejo, Jhonatan Narvaez oraz Daniel Martinez.
Gdy Brytyjczyk odbił 6,8 kilometra przed metą, od razu do ataku ruszył João Almeida. Kolarz Deceuninck-Quick-Step zyskał kilkadziesiąt metrów, a za nim ruszyli Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) i Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech) i George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma).
Brytyjczyk dyktował tempo w grupce, podczas gdy kolarze Ineos Grenadiers, Jonathan Castroviejo i Daniel Maritnez, niewzruszenie nadawali tempo dla Bernala. Za Kolumbijczykiem zostali tylko Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Nippo), Romain Bardet i Michael Storer (Team DSM), Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) oraz Koen Bouwman (Jumbo-Visma).
Yates na 5400 metrów przed metą zaczął odjeżdżać z grupki Almeidy i Caruso. Bernalowi odjechał za to Carthy, natomiast 4 kilometry przed metą w pogoń za Yatesem ruszył Vlasov. Martinez i Bernal zachowali spokój, co na początku największej stromizny pozwoliło im złapać Almeidę, Carthy’ego i Caruso, a na 3,5 kilometra przed metą również Vlasova.
Yates w tym punkcie mógł liczyć tylko na siebie i dysponował przewagą 30 sekund. W grupce Bernala zostali Caruso, Almeida i Vlasov, jedyni zdolni wytrzymać tempo Martineza. Ten ze zmiany zszedł 2500 metrów przed metą, zostawiając liderowi wyścigu zadanie odrobienia 20 sekund.
Bernal zebrał się w sobie i rozpoczął pogoń z Almeidą na kole. Przewaga Yatesa stopniała, a Portugalczyk, mając nadzieję na etapowe zwycięstwo, półtora kilometra przed szczytem dał zmianę Kolumbijczykowi.
Yates do mety zmierzał pewnie, ale na ostatnim kilometrze widział już rywali. Almeida wyrwał się, by spróbować wygrać etap, ale ruch ten okazał się spóźniony. Brytyjczyk triumfował i choć na mecie zyskał tylko 28 sekund nad Bernalem, to więcej zarobił nad Caruso i zbliżył się do Włocha w klasyfikacji generalnej.

No no, czyżby Pan Bernal troszkę osłabł?
Raczej wrócił mu większy ból pleców. Kiepsko to widzę jeśli chodzi o dalszą karierę. Młody chłopak, a od roku nie mogą go wyleczyć. Każdy kto miał kiedyś przewlekły ból pleców to wie jaki to dramat, nie ma żadnej pozycji w której nie boli, a jak ktoś nie miał to nie jest w stanie sobie tego wyobrazić.
A Sagan niczym herszt bandy dostał karę za zastraszanie zawodników :)))
