Kanadyjczyk Hugo Houle wygrał w pirenejskim Foix szesnasty etap Tour de France.
31-letni zawodnik grupy Israel-Premier Tech po całodniowej uciecze na mecie pierwszego z pirenejskich etapów zameldował się przed Francuzem Valentinem Madouasem (Groupama-FDJ) oraz drużynowym kolegą Michaelem Woodsem.
W klasyfikacji generalnej na prowadzeniu pozostał Duńczyk Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), który po raz kolejny skutecznie zneutralizował ataki Tadeja Pogacara (UAE Team Emirates).
Pierwszy z trzech pirenejskich odcinków Tour de France w drugiej części trasy prowadził przez dwa podjazdy pierwszej kategorii Port de Lers i Mur de Péguère. Tą drugą premię, usytuowaną 27 kilometrów przed metą, wyróżniała pochyłość ostatnich 3300 metrów, nie schodząca poniżej 11%.
Ucieczka dnia niespodziewanie zawiązała się już po 4 kilometrach, gdy oderwało się 29 zawodników: Łukasz Owsian i Maxime Bouet (Arkea Samsic), Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Wout van Aert i Nathan Van Hooydonck (Jumbo-Visma), Daniel Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), Alexander Vlasov i Felix Großschartner (Bora-hansgrohe), Mikkel Honore (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Gorka Izagirre i Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Damiano Caruso i Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Olivier Le Gac, Valentin Madouas i Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ), Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM), Simone Velasco (Astana Qazaqstan), Stefan Bissegger i Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Philippe Gilbert i Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal), Tony Gallopin (Trek-Segafredo), Hugo Houle i Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Alexis Gougeard i Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels-KTM). W grupie najwyżej sklasyfikowany był Vlasov, który w klasyfikacji generalnej tracił 10 i pół minuty.
Na zjeździe z pierwszej na trasie górskiej premii, Côte de Saint-Hilaire (14 km; 1,5 km; 6,6%, kat. 4), zaatakował Burgaudeau, do którego dojechali Gougeard i Jorgenson. Akcja nie miała na tym etapie etapu większego sensu, dlatego Amerykanin, jak i jej inicjator wkrótce zwolnili. Gougeard wygrał Col de l’Espinas (37 km; 5,3 km; 5%, kat. 3) i dopiero wówczas poczekał na pierwszą grupę.
Peleton na lotnej premii w Lavelanet (68 km) był spóźniony o 6:45. Ze znacznie większą stratą kręcił gnębiony przez kłopoty zdrowotne Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates). Różnica wciąż się powiększała, u podnóża Port de Lers (53,4 km przed metą; 11,4 km; 7%, kat. 1) wynosiła 8 minut.
Na początku wspinaczki zaatakował Caruso, następnie do Włocha dojechali Storer, Woods, a w końcu również Geschke, Jorgenson, Van Aerrt i McNulty. Siódemka górską premię zdobyła 26 sekundy przed Vlasovem.
Z głównej grupy odskoczył Enric Mas (Movistar), pod koniec podjazdu raz i drugi ruszył Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), jednak lider wyścigu Jonas Vingegaard nie okazał chwili słabości. Po takim przyspieszeniu zostali z tyłu Romain Bardet (Team DSM) i Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), a strata stopniała do 7:40. Pogacar zaatakował również na zjeździe z Port de Lers, jednak również bez powodzenia.
Przed ostatnią przeszkodą na trasie, Mur de Péguère (27 km przed metą; 9,3 km; 7,9%, kat. 1), do czołówki wrócili Vlasov, Teuns, Gallopin, Izagirre, Madouas, Burgaudeau i Houle. Ten ostatni od razu odjechał, rozpoczynając z niewielką przewagą wspinaczkę.
Kanadyjczyk powiększył różnicę do minuty i dopiero gdy wjechał na ściankę, zaczęli się do niego powoli zbliżać Jorgenson, Storer i Woods.
W grupie lidera do pracy przystąpił Rafał Majka (UAE Team Emirates). Tempo Polaka wytrzymali Pogacar, Vigenegaard, Nairo Quintana (Arkea Samsic), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Geraint Thomas i Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers). Majka nie wyprowadził jednak Pogacara do ataku, ponieważ zerwał łańcuch w rowerze.
Kuss przejął prowadzenie, odłączając Gaudu i dwójkę „Grenadierów”. Ataków nie zobaczyliśmy.
Z przodu Houle wjechał na Mur de Péguère 25 sekund przed Jorgensonem i siedzącym mu na kole Woodsem. Grupa lidera jechała ze stratą 6 minut.
Zjazd i płaski fragment do mety nic nie zmienił na czele. Jorgenson ryzykował na zjeździe, za co zapłacił upadkiem. Houle dojechał do Foix po zwycięstwo dla siebie, dla Kanady i dla drużyny z Izraela.
