Belg pokonał na ulicach Frankfurtu nad Menem Johna Degenkolba (Lotto Soudal). Trzecie miejsce zajął Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates). Najlepszy z Polaków, Cesare Benedetti (Bora-hansgrohe) finiszował jako 71.
Pagórkowata trasa wyścigu w Hesji prowadziła przez Feldberges (48 km; 11 km; 4,8%), następnie wiła się, zaglądając dwa razy na Ruppertshain (60 – 108 km; 1,3 km; 8,6%), czterokrotnie na Mammolshain (81 – 96 – 130 – 146 km; 2,3 km; 8,2%) oraz na Billtalhöhe (101 km; 2,6 km; 6,2%). Końcowe 41 kilometrów było płaskie, z finiszem przy Alte Oper we Frankfurcie nad Menem.
Ucieczkę dnia stworzyli Luke Durbridge (Team BikeExchange), Simone Velasco (Gazprom-RusVelo), Boris Vallée (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB), Erik Nordsaeter Resell (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) i Mathias Norsgaard (Movistar Team). Piątka uzyskała przewagę około siedmiu minut nad peletonem. Vallee został z czołówki niemal 100 kilometrów przed metą, a akcja została skasowana około 60 kilometrów przed finiszem.
Kontrę przypuściła szesnastoosobowa grupka – Matteo Fabbro (Bora-hansgrohe), Michael Matthews, Lucas Hamilton, Luke Durbridge (cała trójka BikeExchange), Marco Canola, Cristian Scaroni (obaj Gazprom-RusVelo), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo), Louis Vervaeke (Alpecin-Fenix), Georg Zimmermann, Lorenzo Rota (obaj Intermarche-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux), Damien Touze (AG2R Citroen Team), Mike Teunissen, Sam Oomen (obaj Jumbo-Visma), Ben Hermans (Israel Start-Up Nation) i Thomas Champion (Cofidis). Peleton ich odpuścił na 45 sekund, a gdy zbliżał się do czołówki odskoczyli Zimmermann i Scaroni.
Niemiec i Włoch utrzymywali kilkunastosekundową przewagę na rundy we Frankfurcie nad Menem wpadli 15 sekund przed peletonem. Duet ostatecznie został złapany 10 kilometrów przed metą, gdy w głównej grupie na czele kręcili kolarze BikeExchange.
Ostatnia runda nic nie zmieniła, tempo nadal dyktowała drużyna z Australii. Dopiero cztery kilometry przed metą pojawiły się drużyny Jumbo-Visma i Bahrain Victorious, zaś 1600 metrów mocno depnęła ekipa Alpecin-Fenix, prowadząc stawkę w końcówce. To sprawiło, że w wybornej pozycji znalazł się Jasper Philipsen. Jako pierwszy sprint rozpoczął Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates), następnie na czele kręcił John Degenkolb (Lotto Soudal). Ich nadzieje poskromił jednak Philipsen, który spisał się najlepiej i uplasował się na pierwszej pozycji. Belg wyraźną przewagą odniósł sukces w Eschborn-Frankfurt i dodając do swojego palmares drugą jednodniówkę w tym sezonie, po sukcesie w kwietniowym Scheldeprijs.
