30-letni Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) triumfował w 71. edycji Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Belgijski zawodnik pokonał na finiszowych metrach mistrza świata Petera Sagana (Tinkoff) i Tiesja Benoota (Lotto Soudal).

Najlepszy z polskich zawodników był Łukasz Wiśniowski (Etixx-Quick Setp), który ukończył zawody na 31. miejscu.

Dziesięć odcinków brukowych oraz trzynaście flandryjskich “bergów”, w większości usytuowanych w drugiej części trasy, leżało na trasie otwierającego sezon północnych klasyków wyścigu o długości 200,8 km. Pogoda sprzyjała, było chłodno, ale słonecznie.

Ucieczkę dnia uformowali Kristian House (ONE Pro Cycling), Alexis Gougeard (Ag2r), Julien Morice (Direct Energie), Kevin Van Melsen (Wanty), Maxime Farazijn (Topsport Vlaanderen ), Kai Reus (Veranda’s Willems), Brian van Goethem (Roompot), Stef Van Zummeren (Veranda’s Willems), Zakkari Dempster (Bora-Argon 18), Hugo Hofstetter (Cofidis), Benoit Jarrier (Fortuneo) i Brecht Dhaene (Veranda’s Willems).

Przewaga dwunastki szybko zbliżyła się do 6 minut, ale na więcej nie pozwoliła kontrolująca od początku sytuację ekipa Etixx-Quick Step. Prowadzącej grupie na legendarnym Muur – Kapelmuur (85,6 km; 475 m; 9,3%) pozostało 3:25.

Im bliżej mety, tym tempo rosło. Katusha, Team Sky, Trek, BMC, Tinkoff, każdy z zespołów starał się trzymać w czubie peletonu. Brukowany Kruisberg (133,8 km; 1800 m; 4,8%) pościg opuścił ze stratą półtorej minuty. Na odcinku brukowym Donderij (138,5 km; 800 m) defekt zatrzymał Michała Gołasia (Team Sky).

Wyścig na poważnie rozpoczął się na brukowym Taaienbergu (143,4 km; 530 m; 6,6%). Zaatakował Luke Rowe (Team Sky), za którym ruszył Tiesj Benoot oraz nieco spóźnieni Peter Sagan i Greg van Avermaet.

Czwórka dziesiątą wspinaczkę, brukowy Eikenberg (148,8 km; 1200 m; 5,2%), opuściła z przewagą około 50 sekund nad peletonem napędzanym przez kolarzy Etixx. Z przodu pozostali Gougeard, Dhaene, Morice i Reus. Prowadząca czwórka na Wolvenbergu (151,9 km; 645 m; 7,9%) miała 15 sekund nad zbliżającą się drugą czwórką.

Dwie pierwsze grupki połączyły się 42 kilometry przed metą. Peleton, z bezradnymi kolarzami Etixx, w tym Łukaszem Wiśniowskim, tracił całą minutę. W jednej z licznych kraks boleśnie wyłożył się Philippe Gilbert (BMC), nieco wcześniej na zakręcie upadł Tony Martin (Etixx).

Po przedostatnim podjeździe, Leberg (162,3 km; 950 m; 4,2%), poszarpana grupa zasadnicza traciła 49 sekund, podobnie było na Boembeke (168,2 km; 700 m; 3,5%). Pościg wyglądał na pogodzony z porażką, zwłaszcza, że brakowało zespołu gotowego na mocne uderzenie.

Ostatni brukowy fragment, Lange Munte (180 km; 2500 m), na czele opuściła piątka: niestrudzony Gougeard oraz Sagan, Rowe, Van Avermaet i Benoot. W grupie tej znajdował się przyszły zwycięzca.

Ten wyłonił się nie ostatniej, prowadzącej nieco w górę, prostej. Mocno ruszył Van Avermaet, a Peter Sagan nie miał w nogach by Belgowi odpowiednio na to odpowiedzieć.
