Zawodnik Ineos Grenadiers przyjechał na metą tuż przed Amerykaninem Matteo Jorgensonem (Visma | Lease a Bike). Trzecie miejsce zajął Kanadyjczyk Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech).
W klasyfikacji generalnej triumfował Słoweniec Primoz Roglic (Bora-hansgrohe), przed Jorgensonem i Gee.
Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) ostatni etap ukończył na 46. miejscu, w generalce plasując się na 32. pozycji.
Pożegnanie z „Delfinatem” (167 km) rozpoczęła wspinaczkę na Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (14 km; 7,1 km; 7,3%), z poprawką na Col des Esserieux (32 km; 4,2 km; 5,4%), następnie trasa zaprowadziła na lotną premię pod Saint-Jean-de-Sixt (53 km; 6,3 km; 4,6%), a w drugiej części trasy wyrosła La Saleve (58 km przed metą; 12,1 km; 6,8%) oraz w finale droga na płaskowyż Glières (9,4 km; 7,1%).
Kolarzom towarzyszyło zachmurzenie duże, następnie umiarkowane, a temperatura nie przekroczała 22°C.
Ucieczka dnia zaczęła się kształtować na pierwszej wspinaczce, ostatecznie znalazło się w niej 11 zawodników: Bart Lemmen (Visma | Lease a Bike), Marc Soler, Tim Wellens (obaj UAE Team Emirates), Nicolas Prodhomme, Bruno Armirail (obaj Decathlon-Ag2R), Sean Quinn (EF Education-Easypost), Lorenzo Fortunato (Astana Qazaqstan ), (UAE), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Omar Fraile (Ineos Grenadiers), Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny) i Guillaume Martin (Cofidis).
Przewaga rosła powoli, na Saint-Jean-de-Sixt (53 km) przekroczyła 3 minuty, by następnie, przed La Saleve (58 km przed metą), zbliżyć się do 4 minut.
W peletonie tempo narzucił zespół Ineos Grenadiers, zmniejszając różnicę do 1:45, jednak po zjeździe z przełęczy odpuścił, dlatego ucieczka ponownie zaczęła zyskiwać, do 2:20. Do pracy powrócili kolarze Bora-hansgrohe, wspomagani ze strony Lidl-Trek. Z dobrym efektem, gdyż u podnóża końcowego podjazdu do odrobienia pozostało zaledwie 30 sekund.
Do ataku ruszył Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek). Włoch szybko wyprzedził uciekinierów i zyskał nad grupą lidera 20 sekund. Z tyłu tempo rozbujał Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers), kasując Ciccone. Ruszył wówczas Carlos Rodriquez, z którym zabrał się De Plus, a także Matteo Jorgenson, Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) i Derek Gee. Roglic został nieco z tyłu, razem z Ciccone.
4,5 kilometra przed metą inicjatywę przejął Gee, a za Kanadyjczykiem podążali Jorgenson i Rodriguez. Strata Roglica wzrosła do 33 sekund.
Końcowe 2 kilometry nieco odpuściło, mimo to, tempa Jorgensona nie wytrzymał Gee. Roglic na ostatni kilometr wjechał ze startą 45 sekund.
Rodriquez dał zmianę Amerykaninowi dopiero na finiszu, sięgając po etapowe zwycięstwo. Żółta koszulka wpadła na metę spóźniona o 48 sekund, co oznaczało, że Roglic w klasyfikacji generalnej obronił 8 sekund przed rewelacyjnym Jorgensonem.
