Rafał Majka (UAE Team Emirates dotarł na metę 14., awansując na 19. lokatę. Ponownie aktywny Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) zameldował się na 80. pozycji.
Na czternastym odcinku “Wielkiej Pętli” kolarze wjechali w Alpy, pokonując 152 kilometry i ponad 4200 metrów przewyższenia.
Trasa od samego startu szła w górę, aż do Col de Saxel (kat. 3; 19 km; 4,2 km; 4,6%; ), następnie jedna po drugiej wyrastały Col de Cou (kat. 1; 35 km; 7 km; 7,4%), Col du Feu (kat. 1; 53 km; 5,8 km; 7,8%) i Col de Jambaz (65,5 km; 6,5 km; 3,8%), gdzie została wyznaczona lotna premia.
Druga część etapu zawierała dwie bardziej wymagające wspinaczki: Col de la Ramaz (kat. 1; 50 km przed metą; 13,9 km; 7,1%) i Col de Joux Plane (kat. HC [B]; 12 km przed metą; 11,6 km; 8,5%), za którą pozostawało 3-kilometrowe wypłaszczenie oraz 8-kilometrowy, niebezpieczny zjazd do Morzine.
Skalę trudności podniosły warunki pogodowe, upadł na całej trasie.
Etap rozpoczął się spokojnie, ale zaledwie po 6 kilometrach, 146 kilometrów przed metą, doszło do olbrzymiej kraksy. Na asfalt polecieli m.in. Antonio Pedrero (Movistar Team), Maxim van Gils (Lotto Dstny), Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën), Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe), Wilco Kelderman (Jumbo-Visma), Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies), Louis Meintjes i Adrien Petit (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty), Daniel Martinez i Omar Fraile (Ineos Grenadiers), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) oraz Estaban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost).
Wyścig został wstrzymany, Pedrero i Meintjes, najciężej poszkodowani w wypadku, zostali zabrani na badania przez służy medyczne. Po wznowieniu rywalizacji wycofał się Chaves, natomiast na Col de Saxel na czoło wyszli Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick-Step), Martínez, Lars van den Berg (Groupama-FDJ), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) i Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech).
Akcja zakończyła się niepowodzeniem. Na zjeździe doszło do kolejnej kraksy, w wyniku której wyścig pożegnali Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich) i James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost).
Kolejna akcja zawiązała się na Col de Cou (35 km). Zameldował się w niej Michał Kwiatkowski oraz Martinez, Lutsenko, Alaphilippe, Van den Berg i Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Mikel Landa i Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Nils Politt (Bora-hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone, Mads Pedersen i Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl-Trek), Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Guillaume Martine i Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Alex Aranburu, Gorka Izagirre i Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar Team), Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands i Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Clement Champoussin (AG2R Citroën), Lawson Craddock (Jayco AlUla), Tobias Halland Johannessen i (Uno-X).
Grupka tasowała się, a przewaga nie przekraczała dwóch minut, gdyż w peletonie tempo nadawała ekipa Jumbo-Visma. Na Col de Cou punkty zdobył Powless, na Col du Feu jako pierwszy zameldował się Ciccone. Włoch wygrał też sprint na Col de Jambaz, a przewaga grupki dobiła do dwóch minut.
Na Col de la Ramaz tempo rozkręcili Tiesj Bennot i Nathan van Hooydonck, a następnie Dylan van Baarle. Uciekinierów, mimo ponawianych prób Ciccone i Woodsa, złapano: przewaga 48 sekund okazała się niewystarczająca. Peleton zaczął rzednąć: kłopoty mieli m.in. Tom Pidcock i Egan Bernal (Ineos Greandiers).
Van Baarle skończył pracę 2 kilometry przed szczytem i zostawił Vingegaarda, Keldermana i Kussa pod opieką Wouta van Aerta. Belg dociągnął grupę na szczyt, na kole mają kilkunastu kolarzy, w tym Tadeja Pogacara, Rafała Majkę, Adama Yatesa i Felixa Großschartnera. W tej grupce jechali też Hindley, Simon Yates i Chris Harper (Jayco AlUla), Carlos Rodriguez i Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious).
Grupkę na Col de Joux Plane prowadził Kuss, a ofiarą jego tempa padł Hindley. Kłopoty miał też Rodriguez, a po zmianie Adama Yatesa, 16 kilometrów przed metą, a 4 kilometry przed szczytem, wystartował Pogacar.
Słoweniec odjechał na kilka sekund, ale nie zdołał odczepić Vingegaarda. Duńczyk trzymał się kurczowo, ale kilkusekundowa przewaga utrzymywała się przez 2500 metrów. Lider wyścigu 13,5 kilometra przed metą dojechał do rywal, a dwójka do szczytu jechała spokojni, co pozwoliło straty odrobić trzeciemu na trasie Rodriguezowi.
Przed szczytem Pogacar ruszył jako pierwszy, chcąc zdobyć sekundy bonifikaty, ale na jego drodze wyrosły motocykle z fotografami a potem szpaler fanów. Vingegaard zaskoczył Słoweńca i w sprincie zdobył bonifikatę. Rodriguez tracił do nich około 20 sekund, natomiast większą stratę notował Hindley – 1:40.
Hiszpan z Adamem Yatesem na kole dojechał do prowadzącej dwójki na zjeździe i na 8 kilometrów przed metą zaatakował. Pogacar i Vingegaard nie zareagowali i zawodnik Ineos Grenadiers zyskał kilka sekund. Liderzy pogoń podjęli na ostatnim kilometrze, ale zwycięstwo etapowe odjechało im przed nosem.
