Ucieczkę dnia zawiązali Jokin Murguialday (Caja Rural), Robert Donaldson (Wielka Brytania), Nícolas Sessler (Global 6 Cycling), Jacob Scott (Canyon dhb SunGod), Gruffudd Lewis (Ribble Weldtite) i Ollie Peckover (SwiftCarbon), odskakując na ponad 4 minuty. Peleton napędzały ekipy Deceuninck-Quick Step, Jumbo-Visma i Israel Start-Up Nation.
Dwóch zawodników zespołu Trinity Racing, Ben Healy i Thomas Gloag oraz Marc Soler (Movistar Team) utworzyło kontrakcję na Eidda’s Well (144 km; 9,5 km; 4,6%). Trójka wzmocniła czołówkę 60 kilometrów przed metą. Główna grupa traciła wówczas 50 sekund.
Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-Quick Step) i Rory Townsend (Canyon dhb SunGod) 40 kilometrów przed metą również zameldowali się z przodu. Chwilę później ucieczka została skasowana.
Nową utworzyli David González (Caja Rural), Max Kanter (Team DSM) i Mauro Schmid (Qhubeka-NextHash), ale sporo przed Marine Drive (6 km przed metą; 1,2 km; 6%) zapędy trójki zostały powstrzymane. Na podjeździe rządy objęli kolarze Ineos Grenadiers, m.in. popracował Michał Kwiatkowski. Wysokie tempo nie powstrzymało przed atakiem Matteo Jorgensona (Movistar Team). Tempo wyznaczył na ściance Michael Woods. Z Kanadyjczykiem zostali Alaphilippe i Van Aert. Po chwilowym zwolnieniu dołączyli Mikkel Frølich Honoré (Deceuninck-Quick Step) i lider Ethan Hayter. Ostatecznie na finisz najwięcej sił zachował Van Aert, który minimalnie wyprzedził tęczową koszulkę.
