Mistrz świata Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) został triumfatorem 69. edycji Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne.

Słowak pokonał na finiszowych metrach Jaspera Stuyvena (Trek-Segafredo) i Luke’a Rowe’a (Team Sky). 64. miejsce zajął Michał Gołaś (Team Sky).

Dwanaście podjazdów, w większości ulokowanych w trzeciej ćwiartce 200-km dystansu, czekało na kolarzy we flandryjskim semi-klasyku.

Ucieczka dnia zawiązała się dopiero około 60 kilometra, w składzie Alexis Gougeard (Ag2r La Mondiale), Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Soudal), Antoine Duchesne (Direct Energie), Guillaume Boivin (Israel Cycling Academy), Alex Kirsch (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect), Sjoerd van Ginneken (Roompot), David Boucher (Pauwels sauzen – Vastgoedservice), Sander Cordeel (Vérandas Willems-Crelan) i Maxime Farazijn (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise).

Dziewiątka w połowie wyścigu jechała z zapasem 6 minut. Od tego punktu peleton przyspieszył, dość szybko redukując stratę. Na Oude Kwaremont (115,5 km; 2200 m; 4%) mocno pociągnęli Ian Stannard (Sky), Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step) i Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal). Wyodrębniła się ponad 20-osobowa grupa, która zaczęła odjeżdżać grupie zasadniczej. W kontrakcji nie zabrakło Petera Sagana, Grega Van Avermaeta (BMC Racing), Arnauda Demare (FDJ), Matteo Trentina (Quick-Step Floors), Jaspera Stuyvena, Luke’a Rowe’a i Tony Martina (Katusha). Ten ostatni nie miał szczęścia, gdyż nie zmieścił się na ustawionym wachlarzu, upadając z dwoma innymi kolarzami.

Ostatni na trasie podjazd, Nokereberg (150,6 km; 350 m; 5,7%), czołówka opuściła 33 sekundy przed grupą faworytów. Peleton napędzany przez Direct Energie i LottoNL-Jumbo tracił ponad 2 minuty.

Uciekinierów doścignięto dopiero 32 kilometry przed metą, nie próżnował natomiast peleton, który zbliżył się na niecałe pół minuty. Wyścig dopiero po ataku obrońcy tytułu, Jaspera Stuyvena, na nowo się ożywił.

Do Belga doskoczyli po kolei Stybar z Trentiem, Benoot oraz Rowe. Na tak silną grupę nie było sposobu. Piątka ostatnie 15 kilometrów rozpoczęła z przewagą 30 sekund nad grupą van Avermaeta oraz 1:17 nad peletonem.

Do ostatniej prostej sytuacja pozostała bez zmian. Trentin dłuższym finiszem spróbował przechylić szalę na swoją stronę, ale ostatnie słowo należało do Sagana. Słowak przyspieszył niespełna 300 metrów przed kreską, pozostawiając rywali daleko za sobą.
